Review of Agri-Environment Scheme Monitoring Results and R&D - MA01001

This project will review evidence from MAFF/Defra's Agri-environment Scheme Monitoring and Research programmes to provide an independent assessment of the environmental impact of the principle Agri-Environment Schemes to date, focusing in particular on the Environmentally Sensitive Areas Schemes and the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. As such, it is intended that it will feed important information on the scheme outcomes into Defra`s review of Agri-Environment Schemes.

The key objective for the work is to obtain information which will contribute to:

1. assessing the overall impact of agri-environment schemes, particularly in relation to their stated objectives;
2. understanding the performance of the schemes with respect to associated policy drivers, such as the UK Biodiversity Action Plan;
3. effective implementation and development of agri-environment schemes.

The project will be desk-based and will review a wide range of existing sources of information, including reports from the scheme monitoring programmes, research reports, including socio-economic evaluations, and evaluate these together with scheme uptake data and other relevant information supplied by Defra.

As well as reviewing evidence for the environmental performance of the schemes, the report will assess the contribution of Defra`s Conservation R&D programme to scheme development and will evaluate the contribution being made by the schemes to a range of associated policies, including the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.

Projected Outputs
A final report will be produced in 2002.
