Migratory Salmonid, Eel & Freshwater Fish Stocks & Fisheries - SF04001

Summary Objective
To advise on all aspects of migratory salmonid, eel and freshwater fish stocks and the fisheries dependent upon them.

Description of Services and Functions
To provide advice and technical support to Defra and WAG on matters including

- The status of migratory salmonids, eels and freshwater fish stocks and the factors affecting them:
- The effects of fisheries upon such stocks:
- The regulation of fishing activities, including proposed byelaws and NLOs:
- The Department’s R&D programme on migratory salmonids and eels, and if appropriate, to monitor extra-mural projects:
- Control on the keeping and release of non-indigenous fish species.

To support these advisory duties by:

- Conducting studies to monitor the status of salmonid stocks and the effects of fisheries and other factors upon them:
- Developing new methods to monitor and assess stocks of migratory salmonids and eels.

To report on the status of salmon stocks in England and Wales to ICES and to NASCO and to attend relevant meetings.

To attend national and international meetings as required.

To provide a Programme Manager for the SF Commission extra-mural programme, advising on the new areas for funding, liaising with contractors and co-ordinating funding arrangements with SD.
