Field work to validate the manure incorporation volatilization system (MAVIS) - ES0116

The objective of this project is to validate the MAVIS model, developed under project AM0104, that estimates the optimum method of incorporation of solid (litter-based) manures (FYM) in order to reduce ammonia (NH3) volatilisation following spreading. The project will also measure emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) to quantify the impact of NH3 abatement on N2O emissions. The effects of incorporation on nitrate (NO3) leaching will be estimated using the MANNER model. The impact of the treatments on subsequent crop nitrogen uptake and yield will also be measured.
The project will provide information to Policy makers on the most effective means of incorporating manures to reduce NH3 emissions and also allow reliable estimates to be made of the impact on other losses of nitrogen and provide data on the agronomic consequences of immediate manure incorporation.
1. To quantify by means of controlled field experiments the effectiveness of incorporating solid manure into soil by plough, disc or tined cultivator as a means of ammonia abatement.

2. To validate work rates for the machinery used in MAVIS.

3. To propose best practice for minimising ammonia emissions from land application of solid manures.

4. To estimate the effect of manure incorporation on nitrate leaching.

5. To measure the effect of manure incorporation on nitrous oxide emissions.

6. To measure the effects of the incorporation treatments on the yield and N uptake of the subsequent crop.
