Investigation of the relationship between storm energy, daily rainfall total and index of continentality. Part 1 - SP0408

Description
The objective of this project is to summarise the frequency distributions of potentially erosive storm energy for study sites representative of the range of seasonal rainfall volume and an index of continentality within England and Wales. For the 1975 Flood Studies Report, the continentality index is defined from observation as the ratio of the expected 1 hour and 2 day rainfall totals with a return period of five years. The continentality index will have low values in high rainfall areas with relatively light short duration rainfall, and high values in low rainfall areas with frequent thunderstorms. Statistical models will be fit to the frequency distributions for each season. The parameters of the models will be tested for relationships with daily rainfall totals and the continentality index.

Successful model development will enable derivation of properly weighted estimates of the energy input at a site given only observed daily rainfall data, rather than sub-hourly time series of individual storms. This will facilitate the scaling of detailed process based plot and slope erosion models to the catchment scale at which sub-hourly rainfall data are generally unavailable. Future integration of the statistical models with existing maps of the continentality index and synthetic time series of rainfall (using a stochastic weather generator) will enable national analyses of potentially erosive storm energy.
Objective

1. To summarise the frequency distributions of potentially erosive storm energy for study sites representative of the range of seasonal rainfall volume and an index of continentality within England and Wales.
2. To fit statistical models to the frequency distributions for each season. The parameters of the models will be tested for relationships with daily rainfall totals and the continentality index.
