Hardy Nursery Stock: Integrated control of slugs and snails - HH1944TFV

Description
UK growers are experiencing difficulties in controlling snails and slugs on Hardy Nursery Stock (HNS) with conventional molluscicide pellets. This project aims to develop improved, integrated strategies for control, by identifying the main species causing damage, investigating their biology and the sources of infestation, and evaluating biological control methods with entomopathogenic nematodes and the efficacy of barrier or repellent techniques. The development of alternative, more effective control measures will reduce plant losses, improve plant quality and marketability, and offer a sustainable strategy for controlling snails and slugs on HNS which will will satisfy consumer and retail demands for produce grown with minimal use of pesticides.
Objective
1. To identify the species of snails and slugs currently causing damage and difficulties in control on HONS nurseries.

2. To identify the plant species damaged on HONS nurseries, the time of year infestation and damage occurs, and to estimate the extent of the damage both under protection and outdoors.

3. To investigate the biology and likely sources of the predominant snail and slug species in order to plan the optimum timing and components of potential control strategies.

4. To evaluate the efficacy of ‘Nemaslug’ at various dose rates against the selected predominant snail and slug species, compared with that of chemical molluscicides, both in the laboratory and under commercial conditions.

5. To evaluate the efficacy of physical barrier or repellent techniques against the predominant snail and slug species, to prevent infestation of new plants brought onto the nursery.

6. To produce a factsheet for growers, with details of the snail and slug species and the results of the research.
