Developing a fertility index (DFI) - LK0639

Description
Whole crop cereal silages made from wheat and barley are becoming increasingly popular feed for ruminants in the UK, particularily in areas where maize silage cannot be grown or harvested.

To obtain estimates of their nutrient values, silages are analysed using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) technology, where the samples are scanned by infrared light and the derived reflectance spectra related to the chemical and biological analysis of the silage.

Currently there are no agreed NIRS equations to predict the analysis of wholecrop wheat and barley silages. As a result, the analysis supplied to farmers is often incorrect, and is likely to result in inaccurate feeding. This jeopardises animal performance and health as well as increased environmental pollution through inefficient nutrient use by the animal.

This project aims to develop reliable NIRS prediction equations for these forages to supply to the UK farming industry via the silage analytical laboratories.
