Information systems developemt to graphically represent long-term datasets held on relational databases - HP0138

Description
Methodology will be developed to allow the graphical representation of data generated from research projects held in static or dynamic data sources via interactive web pages. CSL currently holds databases of information collected for the MAFF-funded surveys of diseases of winter wheat, winter barley, winter oilseed rape and potatoes, and these survey databases will be used as a model to enable the development of graphical interactive web access. The survey databases hold spatially referenced data on incidence and severity of diseases together with agronomic details and information on pesticide use. To aid technology transfer, CSL already provides static Web pages showing disease levels for the current year of each survey. These pages are updated to display the latest disease levels as the information is received from ADAS and entered onto the survey databases. However, more complex analyses, including within-year and cross-year correlations are, at present, only possible by experienced database managers using Structured Query Language and ACE report generators. A method will be developed to allow pre-specified queries to be carried out via the Internet by end users inexperienced in database programming languages, and the results of these queries to be displayed graphically. The system development necessary to allow this would require the involvement of experienced information systems specialists. The development of interactive web pages, which allow graphical presentation of survey data, will improve the accessibility of the survey information to the agricultural and research communities. Technology transfer is a high priority of MAFF-funded projects and the work outlined here presents the opportunity to set in place the methodology for ensuring that such information generated through a wide range of research projects is easily accessible to the industry.

1. Develop methodology to allow the graphical display of data generated from research projects held in static or dynamic data sources via interactive web pages.
2. Develop interactive web pages to dynamically display results generated from end-user queries of the disease survey databases.
