An investigation of the biology and control of Plasmodiophoraceous virus vectors - PH0115

Current methods of Rhizomania control involve containment to limit the rate of spread of the disease and the use of resistant/tolerant cultivars. Long-term disease control requires investigation of a more targeted and novel method of disease control.

The aim of the project is to investigate novel methods for the control of Rhizomania. The objectives include (1) an investigation into the use of trap crops for control of soil-borne virus diseases. Previous experiments at CSL have suggested that growing resistant cultivars of sugar beet (e.g. Ballerina) in Rhizomania infected soil can reduce the soil inoculum level. It is thought that a host crop could stimulate the germination of the vector Polymyxa betae, resulting in infection of the host crop. A reduction in Rhizomania inoculum in soil may only be achieved if the host plants are physically removed from the soil before the fungus and virus have had time to multiply in the plant. Optimising the time of host removal from the soil may provide a potential way of controlling the disease in the short term. In view of this, glasshouse trials were set-up to further investigate the potential for optimising trap crop removal as a means to reduce soil contamination by Rhizomania. (2) Identification of germination triggers for spores of the vector protists. Although phytoremediation using trap crops may provide a short-term solution for Rhizomania control, a longer-term solution is still needed. The identification of factors which induce germination of P. betae and other soil-borne vectors would allow the possibility of designing chemicals to apply to the soil to mimic the presence of sugar beet, without providing a host for the survival and growth of the fungus.
