An investigation of risk factors for scrapie at flock level - SE0227

November 2003 - This is a continuation of Project SE0227 which has approved funding from 1999 until April 2005. The implementation of EU Regulations for TSE control in affected flocks from October 1st 2003 has resulted in a reduction of the purchase, post-mortem and IHC aspects of the project. Lower than anticipated farm recruitment and several other factors, including difficulties with staff recruitment, have necessitated a revision of the proposal. These factors are discussed in more detail in the accompanying explanatory letter. As a result, this replanned proposal includes: cost reductions for 2003/04 and 2004/05, and a request for extension into 2005/06 to enable the data collected to be analysed.

Dec 2002 - This is a continuation of Project SE0227, which has approved funding from 1999 until April 2005. The project suffered from delays due to restrictions on farm activities in 2001 because of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Epidemic. The project actively recruited farms from March 2002 onwards. Case farm response has been lower than anticipated, and farm visits are extremely seasonal. Cost reductions have been negotiated in a number of areas, notably genotyping.These factors necessitate a revision of the proposal.

The main objective of this project is to identify risk factors for the introduction and maintenance of scrapie in sheep flocks in the UK.

The results of this research project will be an improved understanding of the dynamics of scrapie between flocks. This will improve our ability to advise all sheep farmers on possible measures to prevent introduction of scrapie into their flock and sheep farmers, with a scrapie-affected flock on possible measures, to prevent the maintenance of the disease in their flock.Control of scrapie is important because of the economic impact of TSEs on the livestock industry, animal welfare considerations and the potential human health risk if BSE has been transmitted to and maintained in the sheep population.
