Development of botanical diversity in grassland swards following species introduction - BD1431

Description
The main purpose of the proposed research is to improve our knowledge and understanding of the persistence and dispersal of wildflowers and minor grasses following their introduction to permanent grassland swards or as components of seeds mixtures on arable reversion grassland. This research is needed in order to develop recommendations on the suitability of individual species for use in biodiversity restoration and to refine assessments of the cost effectiveness of methods for enhancing diversity, e.g. in relation to ESAs or Countryside Stewardship. The research is relevant to MAFF policy on agri-environmental schemes.
Objective
Objective 1. Investigate persistence and dispersal of re-introduced forbs and minor grasses on former small-plot trial sites of permanent grassland subjected to botanical enhancement (Objective 1a) and sown arable reversion (Objective 1b) following their return to typical ESA-type farm management.

Objective 2. Investigate the dispersal of re-introduced forbs and minor grasses on to grassland adjoining the former permanent grassland (Objective 2a) and arable reversion (Objective 2b) following the incorporation of the trial sites into grassland subjected to typical ESA-type farm management.

Objective 3. Develop recommendations on the suitability of individual species for use in biodiversity restoration, and thus refine assessments of the cost-effectiveness of methods for increasing species diversity of grassland.
