Methane release from soils - CC0202

CC0202. Methane release from soils (SSLRC Project No. 3813).

Methane is thought to account for approximately 20% of the global warming estimated to have occurred due to greenhouse gases over the past 10 years.
In the UK, the most important methane source is microbiological decomposition of soil organic matter under anaerobic conditions. This project, which will be carried out as a desk study, will aim to provide an estimate of the contribution of this process to the methane budget of the UK. Net methane emission will be estimated, together with temporal and spatial variations and the potential impact of widely accepted climate change scenarios. A literature search will be conducted to identify soil factors controlling methane production and the quantitative relationships between these factors. Rate constants for methane production will be identified, with special attention given to the effect of temperature. Factors controlling methane release from soils will be used to formulate criteria for calculating net emission or sink situations and these criteria will be applied to the units of the National Soil Map. In addition, a soil methane budget will be constructed for the UK and changes in this budget for stated climate change scenarios will be estimated. It is anticipated that this study will enable the UK to provide a better estimate of its total contribution to the world greenhouse gas budget, together with aspects of this budget which may alter as a result of climate changes. The project should also allow calculation of the probable effects on the UK methane emission budget of changes in land practice, including drainage, increased wetness and decline or build-up of organic matter.
