Immune effector mechanisms against respiratory infections in cattle - OD1607

Description
Calf respiratory disease is a serious animal welfare problem and a major cause of economic loss. Furthermore, the widespread use of antibiotics to treat calf respiratory disease increases the risks to human health from antibiotic-resistant organisms entering the food chain. Vaccinating provides a sustainable means of respiratory disease control and will reduce reliance on antibiotics. However, certain vaccines can exacerbate disease. Therefore knowledge of immune responses that are protective and those that can contribute to the pathogenesis of disease is essential for the design of effective vaccine strategies. The aims of this project are to characterise protective and deleterious immune responses to an important respiratory pathogen, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and to define strategies for the induction of specific types of immune response to this virus.
The results from this work will lead to a more targeted approach to the development of vaccines not only RSV but also against other respiratory pathogens, for example M. bovis which will induce protective immune responses in the respiratory tract and avoid immune responses that result in severe respiratory disease. This information will provide opportunities to develop sustainable methods of control against respiratory disease in calves, which will lead to improvement in animal welfare, provide financial savings to the farming community and reduce the reliance on antibiotics for the treatment of calf respiratory disease. In addition, the results will also be of relevance to the development of vaccines against other important infectious diseases. Furthermore, through links with groups working on human respiratory infections at the Edward Jenner Institute for Vaccine Research, Compton, information from this project will lead to the development of vaccines that will improve human health and reduce human health expenditure.
