Risk assessment of late blight disease of potato: diverstiy of the fungus in England & Wales and potential for sexual reproduction - HP0122

Description
Risk assessment of late blight disease of potato: diversity of the fungus in England & Wales and potential for sexual reproduction.
Objective
Sampling of populations of Phytophthora infestans will be carried out by collecting isolates from blighted crops and from seed and ware tubers of indigenous and exotic origin. The diversity of late-blight populations will be assessed and compared with existing databases. Genetic fingerprinting and mating type analyses will reveal ""hot-spots"" of potential sexual reproduction. Inoculum from these foci of sexual activity will be used to experimentally examine evolutionary events in blight-inoculated potato crops in polythene tunnels. Data obtained will allow the hazard of sexual reproduction by P. infestans to be assessed and the risk to potato production in England and Wales to be determined.
