Open Competition: Use of injectors and low trajectory spreaders - NT1401

There is a need to investigate the effectiveness of recent developments in slurry application technology in reducing ammonia losses and improving utilisation of slurry N. This will enable farmers to make more efficient use of slurry N and will help to reduce odour and ammonia emissions following land spreading. This study will aim to improve utilisation of slurry N through improved application technology and reduced ammonia emissions. Existing scientific literature from continental Europe (where slurry application technology is more advanced than in the UK) will be reviewed using computerised databases. Discussions with researchers and machinery manufacturers in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark will also be conducted to ensure that the latest and best technology is incorporated into the project. Replicated small plot experiments will be conducted on sites under arable or grassland management, providing contrasting soil and climatic conditions. A range of slurry application techniques (surface broadcast, shallow slot injection, surface placement with trailing shoe and surface banding with trailing hoses) will be evaluated and compared. Effect of slurry solids content, application time and soil moisture content on machine performance, ammonia loss and crop response will be studied. Ammonia losses following slurry application will be measured using a system of small wind tunnels, and crop response to fertiliser N, slurry N and application technique will be assessed. Results will be incorporated into the ADAS manure N model, thereby contributing to its further validation and improvement.
