EUREKA SCHEME-A proposal to develop awareness of the UK food industry and to identify potential project areas for fundin - FT0401

The aim of EUREKA is to increase the productivity and competitiveness of European industry in the world market. It is a mechanism for fostering pan-European collaboration and provides participating organisations with an opportunity to take part in research and development, leading to products, processes or services with partners in one or more of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. Some 400 organisations within the biotechnology and related industries wre contacted in 1990 and around 15% of those expressed some interest which has resulted in the development of a number of project proposals.
1. To communicate to the industry the elements of the EUREKA scheme and to put across the message that it offers a potentially valuable source of help, and possibly funding, in collaborative projects with other European companies. 2. TO identify the current attitudes of UK companies to this EUREKA initiative and identify the perceived constraints regarding the promotion of the initiative. 3. To consider means of improving the image and reputation of the initiative, and mechanisms for enhancing the awareness and involvement of UK companies in the EUREKA initiative. 4. To assess the potential of particular sectors of UK industry to generated EUREKA project proposals and form an estimate of the magnitude of government funding likely to be needed to support them over a 3 to 5 year period. 5. To identify specific project ideas particularly in the two areas of hygienic food processing and the agriculture-food quality interface, likely to bring overall benefit to the UK economy, and initiate the process of generating EUREKA project proposals.
