Genetic improvement of carrot. - HH0905SFV

Objective
(i) To provide commercial breeders with breeding which have effective resistance to cavity spot disease and which are adapted to UK growing conditions, from which they can develop new varieties.
(ii) To provide commercial breeders with breeding lines with improved splitting and breakage resistance by investigating the genetic basis of resistance, to minimise losses at harvesting.
(iii) To survey genetic variation for b-carotene content in carrot in currently available germplasm and screen for total-antioxidant potential in more exotic germplasm, including novel pigmented types, to assist in the development of carrots with improved nutritional quality.
