Discard and waste in set net fishing systems - MF0606

Description
R&D Summary Objectives:- Examine the problem of discards in the set net fishery including the level of discard and factors which contribute to fish spoilage in this fishery. Key customer purposes:- Help MAFF formulate future management requirements for the set net fishery in the light of discard levels.
Objective
To investigate the spoilage effect associated with operation of a traditional gadoid set net fishery with variations of time of soak and tidal situations. The spoilage effect to be defined as that which leads to rejection of target species either at capture (landing on board vessel) or at first sale or primary processing stages. To collect discards data with respect to non target species taken by the set net during the same trials.
