Investigations into towing performance of fishing vessels - MF0605

R&D Summary Objectives:- Improve MAFF's understanding of the factors which contribute to the 'fishing power' of a vessel in order to make more accurate estimates of the present and potential catching capacity of the fleet. Key customer purposes:- Provide the potential for better control of the fishing fleet capacity through more accurate estimates of fishing power.
(i) To identify the degree of performance improvement (defined as the change in towing capability when towing a trawl at normal trawling speeds) associated with variation of propulsion system specification. The effect of the variations to be defined both for single variations and for practical combinations of the variations. (ii) To identify the effect of carrying out a performance optimisation programme on vessels of the UK fleet less than 10 years old, by review of existing information on their propulsion installations. (iii) To identify a method for estimating an "effective horsepower" of a specified vessel, this value to give a better appreciation of towing performance than the existing total engine power rating.
