Handling Live Molluscs - FC0709

R&D Summary Objectives:- Establish handling systems for mussels and cockles, both on board vessels and ashore, in order to optimise subsequent depuration treatment and reduce spoilage. Key customer purposes:- Enable industry guidelines to be set which will encourage the proper handling of live molluscs and ensure the health risks associated with eating bivalves are kept to a minimum.
To establish prototype handling systems both on board vessels and onshore to achieve necessary standards of hygiene and catch spoilage limitation. To monitor the systems in commercial conditions and with supportive laboratory activities. To define handling procedures which can be readily and cheaply applied in commercial industry and which provide for subsequent monitoring by appropriate authorities.
