Summary Objectives:-
Develop improved methods of measuring fishing effort in the North Sea through an investigation of the relative performance of beam trawls, otter trawls, pair trawls and anchor seines. Coupled with a survey of year types in current use, this will lead to a comprehensive picture of fishing effort.

Key customer purpose:-
Through a better understanding of the relative fishing effort exerted by the different methods. Enable MAFF to move effectively control fishing effort in the North Sea.
Objective
Investigation of the influence of gear parameters upon fishing capacity by trials with representative towed fishing gears and by analysis of fishing statistics.
