Non R&D Summary Objectives:- Provide data on contaminants in commercially exploited fish and shellfish on a scale and at a frequency sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the EC Fish and Shellfish Hygiene Directives and to keep up to date a data base on which local authorities can base their issue of export certificates of compliance. Key customer purpose:- Provide returns to the European Commission demonstrating compliance with the provisions of the community's Fish and Shellfish Hygiene Directives and be able to inform shellfish growers and fish producers whether their produce complies with the limits set by the community.
The major policy objective is to ensure that the UK meets its obligations under the Fish and Shellfish Hygiene Directives in the most cost effective manner. The scientific objective is to ensure that the programme design meets the policy objective and yields data of adequate quality on a scale and frquency that does not leave the UK open to criticism by the European Commission and ensures the export interests of the fish and shellfish industries are safe-guarded.
