NIRS to evaluate ruminant feedstuff - DS0101

Objective
(1) To determine the optimal sample pre treatment and to develop mathematical treatments of spectral data to predict the digestibility of grass and maize silage, straw and grass. (2) To determine through the use of difference spectra on partially digested residues of the above feedstuffs, the biological basis for statistical wavelength selection. (3) To determine whether NIRS can be used to predict more meaningful nutritional characteristics than are used at present. These would include, for example, the rate and extent of cell wall digestion and fermentable and non-fermentable energy. The need to assess such fractions is in line with the recommendations of the TCORN committee.
