Impact of Marine Plastic on Marine Protected Area Habitats and Features - ME6027
|
Description
An evidence gap regarding the impact of plastic litter on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) was identified. In recent standard benthic survey work in twenty-two MPAs across English inshore waters, Natural England found microplastic particles in all study sites and in 61.2% of the samples collected. However, there is a lack of information on the impact of plastic litter on the specific features of the MPA network. |
Objective
ABPmer was commissioned by the Marine Biodiversity Impact Evidence Group (IEG), to synthesise available information to better understand impacts on designated sites and features from plastic pollution. This involved a literature review to identify the potential impact of marine plastic on the features of the English and Welsh inshore and offshore MPA network. A prioritisation of habitats and features was also undertaken to highlight MPA features most at risk from plastic litter based upon the evidence collated in the literature review |
