Feasibility study to consider the use of earth observation satellite data to meet Industry and UK Government statutory monitoring needs in the marine environment. - MB0141

Description
The primary aim of this project is to help find smarter and more cost effective ways of delivering on UK Government and industry obligations by considering the feasibility of using earth observation (EO) satellite data in the marine environment.
Objective
1. Consider the feasibility of using available earth observation satellite data for surveying the marine environment, in particular in meeting statutory monitoring and assessment requirements for UK government and industry, including:
a. For use by industry in carrying out Environmental Impact Assessments and meeting statutory licencing requirements i.e. baseline surveys, post consent monitoring.
b. In meeting statutory requirements to identify, monitor, and report on Special Protection Areas (SPAs) under the EU Wild Birds Directive (Directive 2009/147/EC), Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) under the EU habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), and under the MSFD.
c. In meeting wider monitoring and assessment needs such as understanding species densities and distribution in the marine environment to meet statutory and non-statutory needs i.e. MSFD, seabird census, colony counts;
2. Provide proof of concept by developing and testing a methodology for the use of earth observation satellite data by government and industry (if identified as possible under the feasibility study).
