Developing and trialling new, more resource efficient, product offerings (Recovery of Aluminium from Flexible Packaging) - EV0547

This project’s goal was to assess the feasibility of including flexible packaging in existing household and commercial recycling schemes and recovering aluminium.

Anthesis led a consortium consisting of: SUEZ UK, Enval, Coca Cola, Nestle, Calderdale Council, Hounslow Council and Bracknell Forest Council.

Approximately 5,000 consumers were engaged through the project, which will ran for 2 years and included scoping and delivering a 9 month collection trail of flexible packaging from up to 500 participants across up to 3 geographies/demographics and from households and commercial and industrial premises. Various collection methods were assessed to ascertain the most effective methods for target audience types. During the project customer attitudes to recycling of flexible packaging and collection approaches, responses to communications materials and the operational feasibility of the collections and reprocessing processes were evaluated. Various techniques were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data sets including: surveys, focus groups, material analysis (auditing), weighbridge and other operational information sets. The outcomes of the project will assist SUEZ and other recycling companies to evaluate the potential for inclusion of flexible packaging in other recycling collections and assess the cost benefit of different approaches.

1 .Assess the cost and operational feasibility of recovering aluminium from flexible packaging.
2. Understand public attitudes and behaviour regarding recycling of flexible packaging across different demographics.
3. Identify the effectiveness of behaviour change communication campaigns.
