Description
The principal requirement of this project is to undertake a desk based review to summarise current knowledge in this rapidly developing subject area and deliver a cost and benefit analysis of MGR to the UK, by combining this desk based study with expert input in the form of a Modified Delphi Study. This is to provide advice on the key question - what is the current and potential economic value of MGR in ABNJ to the UK economy?
Objective
1) Provide a review of what Marine Genetic Resources have been/are being harvested in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), from where and by which companies/scientific institutions/public bodies that operate in the UK. (for completion in based on text mining Month 1).
2) Assess the current and potential applications of Marine Genetic Resources taking into account existing limitations in the availability of information. (for completion in Month 3 based on expert interviews and literature review)
3) Assess the current and potential economic value of these MGR applications regarding the contribution of these genetic resources to GDP / jobs via the businesses they support. (for completion in Month 3 based on expert interviews and literature review)
4) Assess the non-market benefits of MGRs in terms of their value to ecosystems services or non-use values. (for completion in Month 3 based on expert interviews and literature review)
5) Highlight any cases of best practice with regard to approaches for using and managing MGR. (for completion in Month 3 based on review of existing relevant guidance and expert interviews).
