Review of Landfill Methane Emissions Modelling - WR1908

Description
To improve the robustness of methane emissions modelling for UK landfills by reviewing current knowledge and data on methane generation, rate of gas capture and oxidation of methane in cover soils aimed at deriving a reworked estimate of landfill gas capture for the UK. The review is required to identify where changes should be made in modelling practice as well as making recommendations for field studies that would help in reducing the uncertainties and validate the assumptions made in the modelling process.
Objective
The main aim of the research is to improve the robustness of methane emissions modelling for UK landfills.
The research must achieve this aim through methods including:
• A focused literature review to determine what data are available
• Working with the landfill and landfill gas industries to determine what data they hold
• The derivation of a reworked estimate of landfill gas capture for the UK, using the data acquired from the above sources
• Identifying where changes should be made in modelling practice
• Recommending priorities for field studies to reduce the uncertainties and validate the assumptions made in the modelling process.
