Predicting Reproductive Failure in Frogs using Non-destructive Biomarkers - A Pilot Study - CB0480

Description
World-wide declines in amphibians have been linked to chemical exposure, possibly acting via endocrine-mediated effects on reproduction. The evidence is equivocal however and further research is hampered by the lack of suitable test methods; we only have a destructive technique at present, the detection of intersex in gonadal tissue. Amphibians are used in an OECD test for thyroid sensitive endpoints but suitable tests for reproductive endpoints are not yet validated.
An alternative approach is to use secondary male sexual characteristics such as nuptial pad size and forelimb width to predict effects on physiology and reproductive success. |
