An analysis of genetic resources and patent activity - WC1068

This project is a follow on project to extend the evidence base to help understand implications of implementation of the Nagoya protocol for access and benefit sharing of genetic information and traditional knowledge under the Convention on Biological Diversity. The project aims are to provide:
1. Analysis of the different sectors use of genetic resources within the UK.
2. Identify species from the UK and UK Overseas Territories appearing in patent applications.
The project outputs will be used to inform our response to international treaties and European regulations.

The project document can be found under project WC1085:

1. Analysis of activity using genetic materials in different economic sectors, notably pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The analysis could break out the major UK sectors in detail as a contribution to wider discussion of the need for “sectoral approaches”. Clarity is presently lacking on the meaning of “sectoral approach”, whether such approaches are necessary, and their practical and cost implications.
2. Analysis on species from the United Kingdom and its overseas territories appearing in patent data to inform discussions on the Nagoya Protocol and its implications for the UK
