A Further Update of the UK'S Persistent Organic Pollutants Multimedia Emissions Inventory - CB0475

Description
Within this project AEA will build upon our previous work in delivering the current UK POPs inventory. AEA, on behalf of Defra, created the first, full, multi-media POPs emission inventory in 2009 and has provided subsequent annual updates. The current inventory covers a broad range of chemical substances including dioxins and furans, polychlorinated biphenyls, hexachlorobenzene and pentachlorobenzene.

This project, which will be delivered over a three year period that includes the next critical reporting deadline under the Stockholm Convention, will ensure that the UK POPs inventory continues to be maintained, improved and updated in a way that fully meets the UKs statutory reporting obligations and provides an accessible evidence base to inform future policy.
Objective
The project will:

Deliver a multimedia POPs emissions database that builds upon the existing inventory and delivers improved data on emissions to air, water and land for all POPs listed under the Stockholm and LR-TAP Conventions;
Addresses data gaps and key source uncertainties within the existing inventory including new research on brominated plastics and PFOS from water treatment works;
Engage with stakeholders on waste electrical and metal industries and reports on observed trends in emissions;
Maintains a watching brief on options for inventory improvement.
