Piloting a cost-effective framework for monitoring soil erosion in England and Wales - SP1311

The proposed work will pilot a cost-effective framework for monitoring soil erosion in England and Wales. We will trial a wide range of erosion monitoring and modelling methodologies evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each, as well as assessing their cost effectiveness across ca. 90 pilot areas, chosen using a statistically robust approach to quantify soil erosion from all pathways. The pilot will draw upon information from not only existing research literature and the extensive research conducted by the project team, but also from a wide range of erosion experts in England and Wales to build a national erosion database which is ‘open-access’ therefore free to all users.

The project will then monitor erosion at each site, in order to determine both the baseline understanding of erosion in England and Wales, but also which techniques and approaches are best suited to quantify erosion in the future and at what cost. Finally, the project will revisit the national erosion monitoring strategy that was reported by the team (Brazier et al., 2011) and make recommendations to Defra as to the best way forward to implement a national erosion monitoring programme.
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of a national sampling strategy to monitor erosion in England and Wales using a pilot-study and to quantify its cost-effectiveness. The work will build directly on the recommendations of the previous project conducted by the consortium for Defra SP1303.
