Carbon footprinting expertise to support companies/growers piloting supplementary requirements to the PAS 2050 for the Carbon Footprinting of Horticulture Products - EV0467

Description
ERM acted as technical advisor to support trials of requirements for the application of the PAS 2050 to horticulture products (PAS 2050-1). Four growers were involved in the pilot and ERM acted in a guiding capacity, visiting each site to understand cultivation activities, assisting with the calculation of product footprints and informing on measures to reduce footprints. ERM also advised on the technical content of the horticulture product rules, and on comparability with the PAS 2050 and other product footprint approaches, for example with regard to allocation approaches and land use change methods

Objective
PAS 2050 is a publically available specification that provides a method for assessing the potential greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) occurring across the life cycle of products.

‘Supplementary Requirements’ are beginning to be developed for different products or sectors. It is expected that these will be used in conjunction with the PAS 2050, where available, with the intention of providing greater clarity and specificity on aspects of the PAS 2050 that are open to choice. In line with this approach, BSI published the “Supplementary Requirements for the Application of PAS 2050 to Horticulture Products” in 2012. Defra commissioned this project to test the application of the Horticulture Supplementary Requirements within the UK; complementing similar trials being run in other countries.
