Basmati rice collaborative trial - FA0110

True line Basmati rice varieties attract higher price to some long grain varieties that superficially look like Basmati, without the characteristic properties. Although there are methods currently available for authenticating Basmati rice developed under the food authenticity programme, new varieties have since emerged which are not caught by the methods currently available. There issues here are:

• Need to upgrade the current method to include new varieties
• Need for developing a robust and updated source of authentic reference samples, rather than relying on old rice standards
• Establishing measurement of uncertainty parameters and sampling guidance (enforcement of Basmati rice code of practice (CoP)
• Barriers to the uptake of the CoP by trade and enforcement in the areas of measurement and sampling methods.

• Update/extend the database of DNA markers for Basmati and non-Basmati varieties to ensure the existing DNA tests can detect and differentiate between emerging varieties and approved varieties and the amount of non-Basmati variety can be quantified.
• Consideration of the deployment of RTPCR as the method of choice (see proposal 15).
• Independent estimation of measurement uncertainty both sampling and analysis, including the development of guidance and consequently, an updating of the CoP.
• Provision of authentic reference material.
