Potential Contaminants in drinking water treatment chemicals - WT1261

Description
The purpose of this research is to investigate whether contaminants may be present in any treatment chemical used in water treatment in England and Wales. The study will investigate manufacturing processes of all treatment chemicals and make an assessment of whether any potential contaminants are likely to arise. The study will also report on incidents of post-production contamination arising from storage and handling.
Objective
The objectives are to:

• Review the existing published information available on contaminants in water treatment chemicals

• Gather and summarise information on known instances of post production contamination for example during storage or transport.

• Assess the usage of water treatment chemicals in England and Wales - to obtain information both at the chemical on product level on the total amounts used and the typical doses applied.

• Summarise the existing restrictions on composition specified in the relevant national and European standards

• Investigate the manufacturing processes involved and take a view on the likelihood of potential contaminants of concern being formed during manufacture.

• Describe existing quality control procedures during manufacture including any criteria for acceptance or rejection of starting materials.

• If any contaminants are thought to arise, where possible, estimate the levels that are likely to arise and consider their fate in water treatment.

• Advise on possible further research to detect possible contaminants different chemicals
