Development of drainflow risk communication tools - PS2245

Description
Agricultural drains are a key transport pathway for pestcides entering surface water bodies and there are a suite of pesticides that are currently problematic with respect to achieving compliance with the Water Framework and Drinking Water Directives that are potentially transported via this pathway. While it might be best practice to assess the state of field drains prior to application of pesticides this is not always practicable. In some instances land managers do not know the state of under drainage for all or some of their land (see PS2239) and in others contract sprayers or farmers undertake spraying several weeks after a recommendation was made by an agronomist by which time the drains may be active.

This package of tools would provide additional risk management tools on top of the in-field risk identification through the development of Crop Protection Management Plans and in addition to the individual product stewardship campaigns that are underway at present, e.g. the Metaldehyde Stewardship campaign. This is achieved by providing further tools and information to assist agronomists and land managers in their decision making processes through informing a series of questions along a decision making tree with respect to drain flow:

1. Am I in a potentially risky location?
2. Am I applying at a potentially risky time?
3. Is the active ingredient of WFD concern that I am proposing using at this time likely to be mobile?

As such the five work packages defined in this approach link quite closely with these questions and are:
