An assessment of the environmental impact of management options for waste wood - WR1209
|
Description
The project aims to provide an assessment of the environmental impacts of possible management options for waste wood across the lifecycle of the processes and end products; and the practicality of such options in the light of current arrangements and available processing facilities.
Studies have indicated that the bio-energy potential of waste wood is substantially underutilised in current waste wood management routes. This study will not only identify sustainably optimal routes in the current systems, but will also seek to identify new or lesser used management routes that may be more environmentally sustainable, yet under-used due to technical or commercial barriers.
Tasks within the project will achieve five main objectives:
1. Establish the Business as Usual (BAU) scenario 2. Identify a range of waste wood management routes 3. Identify the more sustainable routes 4. Outline the practical and commercial issues associated with the more sustainable routes 5. Assess various scenarios of waste wood management options for the future

Objective
Aim
To assess the environmental impacts of possible management options for waste wood across the lifecycle of the processes and end products; and the practicality of such options in the light of current arrangements and available processing facilities.
Phase 1: Sustainability Assessment Objective 1. Establish the Business As Usual (BAU) scenario Task A: Review of available data and current practices Objective 2. Identify a range of waste wood management routes Task B: Identify and plot known management routes Objective 3. Identify the more sustainable routes Task C: Streamlined LCA assessment Phase 2: Technical and Economic Assessment
Objective 4. Outline the practical and commercial issues associated with the more sustainable routes Task D: Technical and Practical Issues Task E: Commercial and Economic Issues Task F: Determine the extent of the issues using data on National arisings of waste wood Objective 5. Assess various scenarios of waste wood management options for the future Task G: Determine availability of WID-compliant plants Task H: Scenario analysis of fuel mixes
