We live in a world of 6 billion people, our impact on the planet’s resources are growing annually. We are making, transporting, buying, using and throwing away more products than ever before. And in the process emit more and more carbon dioxide emissions, more and more waste, abstracting more water, destroying more forests, habitats and biodiversity. As our population grows, to perhaps 9 billion people by 2050, and more countries become more prosperous, our global resources will not easily be able to cope with the demand.
We need to consider ways in which we could reduce UK consumption levels without meeting high levels of resistance. In many ways it will be a significant challenge, as increasing consumption of products is the foundation for current UK macro-economic policy. But the overall vision is to develop policy options which will not only help reduce our impact on the environment, but will also help business to develop more sustainable and enduring business models for the longer term.
