OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) - WC0747

Description
This is not an individual Defra funded project, but a contribution of funds to ensure engagement with the Opal Project, and to demonstrate our support for increasing awareness and involvement of the public in environmental sciences.
Objective
OPAL has multiple aims, which can be found at: http://www.opalexplorenature.org/ . In summary, Opal aims to raise awareness of the natural environment, contribute to the creation of the next generation of nature enthusiasts, provide educational materials and support for schools, increase local participation and develop partnership working between local people, conservationists and the scientific community. The project operates under several themes, including biodiversity, soils, air, water and climate and regional teams will provide support for volunteers to participate in surveys and observations of the natural environment. There are links with the National Biodiversity Network.
The purpose of the Defra contribution to the project is to ensure engagement of Defra with the project and to support the project in increasing awareness and involvement of the public in environmental sciences.
