A review of the risks of endocrine disruptors to bird, fish and mammalian wildlife and implications for pesticide risk assessment - PS2343

Description
EU Directive 91/414 requires that plant protection products have no unacceptable effects on the environment, particularly on non-target species and Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD) is responsible for assessing the environmental safety of pesticides in the UK.
This proposed review will therefore bring together the known facts about Endocrine Disruptor(ED)effects of pesticides on fish, birds and mammals (UK and overseas) incorporating information from recent reviews, e.g. the recent EU reviews by Groshart and Okkerman, 2000; Petersen et al., 2007; as well as literature reviews for publications specifically relevant to pesticides. It will also consider the various known modes of action (MOA) of EDCs, and list in detail the pesticides that are known from laboratory studies to have ED properties to identify classes or structures which may be of particular concern. Finally, it will consider the available and proposed testing strategies for these compounds (e.g. the OECD detailed review paper on appraisal of test methods for sex hormone disrupting chemicals; the OECD detailed review paper for the avian 2 generation toxicity test, the current revision of the EFSA bird and mammal guidance document), and will set out some preliminary ideas about how these test methods can be used to inform future environmental risk assessments of pesticides.

It is intended that the review is directed only at pesticide active ingredients. There is an intention to extend the scope of Directive 91/414 so as to include safeners and synergists and, at a later stage to adjuvants and coformulants but these are not included in this review.
Objective
1. Review of ED effects and effect levels of pesticides on fish, birds and mammals (UK and overseas)
2. Identification of test methodology for evaluating the ED activity of pesticides
