AFM251 - Integration of tri-generation and CO2 based refrigeration systems for energy conservation in the food industry - FT1545

Description
The main objective of this project is, to design, develop and evaluate proof of concept integrated CO2 refrigeration and tri-generation systems for food refrigeration applications. Such systems should combine the efficiency advantages of tri-generation with the advantages of CO2 as a primary refrigerant in low temperature systems and as secondary refrigerant in medium temperature systems. The project will also investigate heat transfer phenomena and effective oil separation to ensure maximum thermodynamic performance for the CO2 system.
Objective

1. To investigate, design, and evaluate proof of concept integrated CO2 refrigeration and tri-generation systems for food refrigeration applications. Such systems should combine the efficiency advantages of tri-generation with the advantages of CO2 as a natural refrigerant.
2. To consider heat transfer performance and optimise the design of the cooling coils of medium temperature cabinets operating with CO2 as a secondary refrigerant and low temperature cabinets operating with CO2 as a primary refrigerant.
3. To investigate the optimum integration and control of these systems to minimise energy consumption and environmental impacts. For example, consider the design of a fully integrated system, compared to separate systems for frozen food and chilled food applications.
4. Demonstrate that the proposed technology can lead to environmental and economic benefits over conventional technologies currently employed by retail food stores.
