Research into the current and potential climate change mitigation effects of Environmental Stewardship - BD2302
|
Description
This project, with its focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation within Environmental Stewardship (ES), supports a UK Sustainable Development Strategy and a Defra Strategic Priority(3) 'Climate change and energy', with reduced greenhouse gas emissions the strategic outcome. Environmental Stewardship was introduced to build on the already successful Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESA) scheme and the Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS). Although primarily engaged with resource protection such as soil and water and the enhancement of biodiversity, the alterations in land use that the undertaking of ES options will require may have implications for climate change.
|
Objective
1. Review existing publications and data relevant to the major processes and changes in land use that contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in UK agricultural systems [0.5 man months]
2. Application of processes to changes in land use associated with individual options in each of the three Environmental Stewardship Schemes.
3. Recommendations for the preferred Environmental Stewardship options to mitigate GHG emissions in UK agricultural systems and recommendations for other options to be included. |
