Studies aimed at the immunological control of gut problems in poultry using coccidiosis as a model system. - OD0547

Objective
The overall aim of this project is to determine the early immune mechanisms that are induced by infection with Eimeria spp in the chicken gut. We will use this knowledge to inform the development of new strategies for coccidiosis control and development of oral vaccination strategies per se. In order to achieve this aim we will study the early events of parasite-host interaction using both in vivo and where appropriate in vitro technologies. The specific objectives are as follows:
1. To determine the early immune events triggered by challenge with Eimeria maxima
2. To determine the reaction of immune and epithelial cell types to exposure with intact eimerian sporozoites or parasite-derived material
