Review of research on recycling of sewage sludge to agricultural land - WT03051

Defra’s research programme on the recycling of sewage sludge to agricultural land was established in 2002. Prior to this, DETR and MAFF funded extensive research programmes in this area. Research funded under these programmes examined a wide range of issues, including sewage sludge controls, long-term fertility of soils, the effects of heavy metals on soil and survival of enteric pathogens in soil amended with sludge.

Defra reviews the scope and content of it’s scientific programme every 3-5 years, ensuring continued procurement of the most appropriate science to inform policy making.

Defra will be carrying out a comprehensive review of sewage sludge R and D projects. This review will provide background information to the formal review in autumn 2006.
