Production of assessments for a UK co-ordinated chemicals management programme - CB01077

This project involves validation of physicochemical and toxicological (human health) test data and production of hazard assessments and, as appropriate, risk assessments on priority chemicals selected by Defra and the Environment Agency for a UK Coordinated Chemical Risk Management Programme. The New UK Coordinated National Chemical Risk Management Programme will require the production of assessments for both hazard and risk on up to 70 chemicals up to 2010.

The UK has now essentially met its current international target of assessing 50 chemicals by the end of 2004, working with the OECD. The UK Coordinated Programme will consolidate input into these various programmes during the period preceding assessments coming forward from the EU REACH system (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of CHemicals). Effort will be put into addressing chemicals of concern to Defra and the Environment Agency which are primarily those which are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) and are either manufactured or used in the UK.
