RADIOACTIVELY CONTAMINATED LAND DEVELOPMENT OF RCLEA MODEL - RS01022

Description
The Radioactively Contaminated Land Exposure Assessment (RCLEA) methodology is DEFRA’s recommended approach for the initial screening of radioactively contaminated soil. It involves estimating potential radiation exposures for comparison with regulatory criteria. This report describes the technical basis for RCLEA and is primarily intended for those familiar with exposure assessment calculations for radioactively contaminated soil.

The report presents the set of mathematical models and data that constitute RCLEA. Where possible, these are consistent with the Contaminated Land Exposure Assessment (CLEA) methodology for non-radioactive contamination in soil. The application of RCLEA is described, including the calculation of radiation dose and ‘Guideline Values’. The latter are calculated soil concentrations that can be compared with measurements to indicate whether or not land requires more detailed assessment to establish if it needs to be treated as being radioactively contaminated.

The models and data presented in the report have also been implemented in an accompanying software application implemented in Microsoft Excel®. The report includes a description of the application and user guide.
