UPDATING AN ESTIMATE OF THE SOURCES OF NITROGEN TO UK WATERS - PHASE 2`

A contract was let with WRc to determine the feasibility of updating the UK estimate of the contribution of various sources of pollution to nitrogen loads in UK freshwaters (Updating an estimate of the sources of nitrogen to UK waters - phase 1. Report attached). This has reported that sufficient information is available to allow Defra to update the figure first quoted by the Royal Society in 1983 and which was based on 1978 estimates of agricultural and STW inputs. Given the changes in the total nitrogen contribution from STW during the AMP3 period, it is particularly important that we update our estimates of the apportionment of nitrogen to its major sources. Such an estimate will provide Defra with a firmer basis for arguing issues such as the requirement for controls on diffuse pollution from agriculture and will answer criticisms received from agricultural lobbies as to the relevance and accuracy of the estimate.

As stated above, this work has been split into two phases. Phase 1 assessed currently availably information to determine the feasibility of carrying out this project and set out a workplan in order to deliver the final required output. Phase 2 will then involve carrying out the apportionment exercise, based on the workplan approved in phase 1. This will involve input from ADAS in the form of data derived from the MAGPIE model. This part of the work is being funded separately.
