Development of a UK Phytoplankton Trophic Index (MARP 20) - ME2204

Description
Summary Objectives:
The primary objective of this programme is to develop improved indicators of undesirable disturbance arising due to inputs of anthropogenic nutrients to coastal waters. Formal assessments of eutrophication are required by a number of EU Directives and OSPAR and there is a recognised need for improved measures of trophic status. The results will provide an opportunity for the UK to propose improved indicators for adoption in formal assessments of eutrophication leading to increased confidence in the outcome in such future assessments.

Key Customer Purposes:
To improve the evidence base available for assessments required by OSPAR, the European Commission and for meeting any challenges that arise in those forums in supporting scientific objectives. To investigate the link between ecohydrodynamics and the susceptibility of different environments to eutrophication. Research should satisfy a key gap in understanding the controls on light climate, especially in shallow coastal and transitional waters; and relate to and complement the recently started eutrophication thematic research proposal (ME22: Nutrient input and eutrophication in the marine environment).
