UK Deep Water Observing System - II (CDEP 84/5/320) - ME3202

Summary Objectives:

To implement the results of the earlier Defra funded scoping project (CDEP 84/5/291) through the engineering and data management design of a demonstrator deep water observation system.

To construct and test all aspects of the deep water observation system developed in the scoping study (ME3101) in a progressively more challenging series of environments.

To achieve deployment of the deep water observation system close to a Met Office deep ocean buoy as a pre-operational DWOS.

To identify non-Defra customers for DWOS data products develop and test data publication and dissemination systems and identify the means to continue the deep water operational system as an operational system.

Key Customer Purpose:

Upon ratification of the OSPAR Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, the UK has agreed to work towards achieving objectives with regard to hazardous substances, eutrophication and the protection and conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. As the progress of the work will be, at least in part, judged by consideration of the state of the marine environment there is a need to understand natural variability.

Changes and trends have been observed in UK coastal seas, however less is known about changes in the NE Atlantic off the shelf break. Information gathered in these deeper waters is not regular and is unlikely to cover major storm events when major episodic changes take place. The aim of ME3202 is to trial recently developed technology to enhance our observation of trends off the shelf break.
