Cost effective diffuse pollution mitigation - ES0121

Description
The future policy for managing agriculture for water quality requires an understanding of both (1) the technical measures that can decrease losses and (2) the costs of implementing these measures.
This project aims to provide hard scientific information on both of these aspects for a number of pollutants that will affect water quality.

Publish reviews on mitigation options that can be posted on the website - Sept 04.

Produce a novel tool for classifying the key generic behavioural properties of diffuse pollutants.

Conduct a `health check` interactive workshop with policy makers and stakeholders to discuss the matrix of mitigation options after 12 months - Nov `04.

Construction of Model Farm Units


Objective
To prioritise options for mitigation diffuse pollution (viz. nitrite, ammomium, pathogens - E. Coli as bacterial indicators, Cryptosporidium and BOD) losses from agriculture in terms of probable costs, pollution reduction effectiveness, practicalities and applicability in England and Wales.

To undertake a `bottom up` literature review of the potential mitigation options avaliable for nitrite, ammonium, pathogens (E. Coli as a bacterial indicator and Cryptosporidium) and BOD (hereby collectively referred to as `diffuse pollutants`).

To produce a novel tool for classifying key generic behavioural properties for diffuse pollutants.

To prepare a mitigation matrix for diffuse pollutants.

To construct typical `model farm` scenarios that can be used to explore mitigation options.

To determine an economic basis and assess applicability to the model farm systems.

To determine cost effectiveness of the mitigation options for the model farm systems.

To scale up the observations for their applicability to geoclimatic regions in England and Wales.
