EU approval of the Autofom for pig carcase classification and updating prediction equations for current techniques - LS3521

Description
A novel and innovative automated method of estimating the composition of pig carcases (the Autofom) has been developed in Denmark. This non-invasive and fully automatic ultrasound machine provides a detailed estimation of individual pig carcase composition. It has the potential to improve the transparent transmission of market signals from consumers to producers. This would improve efficiency in the market and, through the development of information feedback to producers and pig breeding companies, it has the potential to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of pig production.

A significant blockage to the transfer of this novel technology is the requirement for the Autofom to be authorised by the European Commission for the purpose of pig carcase classification.

A number of other simple devices for pig carcase classification are authorised for use in Great Britain. However, this authorisation was achieved based on carcase dissection conducted between 1987 and 1992. Since that time the genotypes in use in Great Britain and the official carcase dressing specification has changed. In the interests of accuracy in carcase classification there is a strong case for the British government to seek the re-estimation of the equations used in the authorisation of these devices. The dissection to achieve this will be according to the “EU Reference Method” and not the UK method originally used.

It is proposed that the authorisation of Autofom and the re-calibration of three existing devices be carried out at the same time and the cost shared between MLC and DEFRA. This will enable data for both purposes to be derived from one set of dissected half carcases. The alternative is for MLC to use industry levy funds to conduct the work necessary for the authorisation of Autofom and for DEFRA to subsequently fund the re-calibration of existing authorised devices. Under such circumstances the total costs would be roughly twice those contained in the proposal.
